Baseball Takes Series from Mountain View

DALLAS – Dallas College Cedar Valley's baseball team rolled to a 16-2 eight-inning win at Dallas College Mountain View Sunday to win the Dallas Athletic Conference series.

The Suns, who improved to 11-5 overall, 4-2 in the DAC, took two of the three in the weekend series.

Cedar Valley pounded 14 hits, and scored six runs in the first inning in Sunday's rubber game. Nursing an 11-2 lead, the Suns scored five runs in the top of the eighth, and kept the Lions off the board to seal the victory.

Six Suns had two hits apiece. Second baseman Ryan Talley was 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, a walk and four RBI. First baseman Daniel Brandon III went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Right fielder Caden Robertson was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, a stolen base and a walk. Left fielder Matthew Marsic had two hits in four trips to the plate, and stole a base. Third baseman Jayden Ramos was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base. Center fielder Antonio Sabala had two hits in six at-bats. Designated hitter Samuel Massi doubled and drove in three runs.

Suns starter Jaxon Simmons (3-1) pitched seven innings, allowing two hits, two runs, neither of them earned, and a walk, while fanning four. Austin Brown worked a perfect eighth inning to preserve the win.

Sunday's series-clinching victory came a day after the Suns dropped a 4-3 verdict at Mountain View (4-10, 1-5). Cedar Valley had eight hits, while the Lions produced 10 in the loss. Sabala, Brandon III and Talley each had two hits.

The Lions scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead. The Suns picked up one in the seventh, but couldn't push another across.

In Friday's series opener in Lancaster, Cedar Valley won an 15-10 slugfest, scoring nine runs in the fourth inning after giving up seven in the first. The nine spot in the fourth put the Suns ahead, 12-8. They tacked on two in the sixth and another in the seventh to put it away.

Cedar Valley outhit Mountain View, 18-15.

Sabala was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Brandon III went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Shortstop Cooper Brewer and Talley also had three hits apiece. Brewer drove in two runs, doubled, and had a stolen base.  

Jeremiah Darrough (1-0) got the win in relief, allowing two runs on five hits, and striking out eight.

Cedar Valley hosts league frontrunner Dallas College Eastfield (14-6, 5-1) noon Wednesday before heading to Mesquite Friday and Saturday in the three-game league series.
