Baseball Outslugs Brookhaven, 11-8

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley's baseball team won the opening game of a three-game series with host Dallas College Brookhaven, 11-8, Wednesday.

The series shifts to Cedar Valley for a pair of noon games Friday and Saturday in Lancaster.

Six Suns had multiple hits in a game where every Cedar Valley batter recorded at least one hit. Catcher Elian Gonzales matched a career-high three hits, doubling and driving in a run and walked in four plate appearances. Left fielder Matthew Marsic homered, doubled, had three runs batted in and walked. Right fielder Caden Robertson was 2-for-4 with a double, a sacrifice fly and two RBI. Second baseman Ryan Talley went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk. Third baseman Jayden Ramos was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Designated hitter Samuel Massi had two hits and a walk in three at-bats.

Center fielder and relief pitcher Antonio Sabala had a triple and a walk. First baseman Blaine Thomas singled home a run. Shortstop Cooper Brewer singled, and drove in two runs.

Robertson, Marsic, Massi and Talley each had a stolen base.

The Suns (19-11, 7-6 Dallas Athletic Conference) outhit the Bears, 16-12. Cedar Valley ranks fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III in batting average (.364). The Suns' 330 hits rank third behind DAC counterparts Dallas College Richland (365) and Dallas College Eastfield (349).

Landon Kinder (1-0) got the win on the mound, allowing three hits, a walk and no runs in four innings of relief.

Cedar Valley took a two-run lead in the second inning before Brookhaven (6-26, 1-12) scored one in its half of the inning. The Suns put four runs on the board in their next at-bat to take a 6-1 lead. The Bears scored again in the bottom of the third. Cedar Valley scored two more in the fourth before Brookhaven answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and four more in the fifth to cut the Suns' lead to 8-7.

Cedar Valley picked up a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to extend its lead out to four. Brookhaven scored once more in the bottom of the ninth, but Sabala didn't allow the Bears to draw any closer.

Cedar Valley's 16 hits marked the eighth time this season the Suns have produced 15 or more.
