Cedar Valley Sweeps Pair from SWAGU JV

WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Dallas College Cedar Valley's baseball team swept a doubleheader at Southwestern Assemblies of God University Junior Varsity Monday, winning 12-9 and 10-1. Both games were seven-inning contests.

The Suns jumped out to a 10-2 lead through four innings in the opener, giving starting pitcher Caleb Pacheco a huge cushion. Pacheco went on to secure his eighth win of the season, which is tied with North Arkansas College's Max Bates for the most in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III.

Cedar Valley answered Southwestern Assemblies of God JV's two runs in the bottom of the fifth with two of its own in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 12-4. SWAGU JV scored five in the bottom of the inning to pull within three, but Suns closer Connor Donathan came on for the last inning-and-a-third to shut the door.

Pacheco (8-1) went four innings, allowing two runs, two hits and three walks, and struck out seven. Donathan didn't allow a base runner, and struck out three of the four batters he faced to earn his first save of the year.

Blaine Thomas had three doubles, three runs batted in and a walk. Caden Robertson had two doubles and three RBI. Cesar Mora went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk. Cooper Brewer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three stolen bases. Antonio Sabala was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.

Cedar Valley outhit Southwestern Assemblies of God JV, 14-9.

In the second game, the Suns broke open a 2-1 game, scoring eight runs in the final three innings to win going away.

Sabala was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Robertson crushed a grand slam for his 14th home run of the season, which is one shy of the national leader. Brewer tripled, drove in a run and walked. Thomas went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Samuel Massi was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks. Jaquavius Davis was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Suns starter Rece Houghton (5-1) went the distance, allowing an unearned run, four hits and a walk, and struck out a season-high seven.

Cedar Valley (31-13, 13-8 Dallas Athletic Conference) opens a three-game series at league-leading Dallas College Eastfield (32-11, 17-4) at noon Wednesday. The Suns are set to host the Harvester Bees at 12 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
