Suns Survive Overtime Thriller with Mountain View, 75-74

LANCASTER, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley women's basketball team pulled out a 75-74 overtime win over Dallas College Mountain View Thursday night in a Dallas Athletic Conference battle.

"It was a great test for our team to see," Cedar Valley head coach Latasha Keith said. "It takes everyone to be ready, and be prepared to play. You need games like this because Mountain View came to play, and throughout all the adversity, our girls never quit and just didn't give up."

The No. 7 National Junior College Athletic Association Division III nationally-ranked Suns improved to 10-3 overall, 2-0 in the DAC. Mountain View fell to 8-7, 0-1 in the league. It was the first overtime game of the season for both teams. 

It marked the sixth win in the last seven games for Cedar Valley. It was also third game in the past four decided by two possessions or less, with the Suns winning two of those three.

The Lions led by two after the first quarter, and 36-35 at the half in a game where each quarter was decided by a bucket or less. Cedar Valley outscored the Lions, 17-16, in the third quarter to knot it up at 52 entering the final period. Both teams scored 15 points in the fourth quarter. The Suns' 8-7 advantage in the extra period was the difference.

Kate Valle had 18 points, five rebounds, five steals and a block for the Suns. She was 5 of 9 from the field. Sierra Headquist scored 16 points, grabbed seven boards, and had four blocks and a steal. She was 8 of 13 from the floor. Ja-Tauria Miller scored 13 points, and Shandrea Yeldell had 10 points, five assists and two steals. Tiffani Hamm had eight points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

Cedar Valley shot 30 of 66 from the floor for 45.5 percent.

"I will say this," Keith began, "learning self -discipline and how to play through adversity will beat any challenge in front of us. It was a great team win, and the game had one of the best women's crowds in Dallas College history."
