Women's Hoops Doubles Up SWAGU JV

LANCASTER, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley's women's basketball team beat Southwestern Assemblies of God University Junior Varsity on back-to-back nights. The Suns won Monday night's game, 89-79. They beat the same team Tuesday, 94-70.

Ranked No. 7 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III poll, Cedar Valley overcame a nine-point first quarter deficit in Monday's game. The Suns trailed, 21-12, after one period, but outscored Southwestern Assemblies of God, 28-13, in the second quarter to take a six-point lead into halftime.

Cedar Valley (12-3) extended its lead to 69-52 entering the final period, and held on to win.

Four starters and five players in total scored in double figures for the Suns. Kate Valle finished with 23 points on 10 of 13 field goal shooting, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Shandrea Yeldell had 14 points on 7 of 14 shooting, five assists and four steals. Nakia Brumley had 12 points, eight assists, three steals and a block. Sierra Headquist had 10 points, going 5 of 5 from the floor, and grabbed four rebounds. Ja-Tauria Miller had 10 points and three assists off the bench. Tiffani Hamm had six points, five rebounds, two steals and a block. Shaniaa Davison had seven points on 3 of 4 shooting off the bench.

The Suns shot 53.5 percent from the field, going 38 of 71. They were 6 of 15 for 40 percent from three-point range. They had 24 assists and 23 rebounds.

On the second night of the back-to-back, Cedar Valley got out to a 48-32 halftime lead, and never let SWAGU JV take control.

Brumley scored a season-high 28 points, going 11 of 16 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She added five assists, four steals and four rebounds. Headquist had 18 points of 7 of 12 shooting, seven boards, two steals and two blocks. Miller scored 16 points, going 5 of 9 from the floor and 2 of 5 from long distance. Yeldell had 15 points, four assists, four steals and a block. She hit 6 of 11 field goals. Hamm and Valle each scored eight points. Hamm matched her season-high with 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass, and had two steals. Valle had four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

The Suns shot 53.7 percent, going 36 of 67. They grabbed 35 rebounds, and had 19 assists.           

It marked the fourth time this season Cedar Valley shot over 53 percent from the floor, and the first time the Suns did so in two consecutive games.

Winners of four straight, Cedar Valley will host Dallas College Richland 6 p.m. Thursday in a Dallas Athletic Conference game. It is the second of two meetings between the two schools. The Suns won the first game on the road, 100-26, on Jan. 19.
