Suns Overcome Dallas Christian, Head to Mountain View Thursday

LANCASTER, Texas -- Dallas College Cedar Valley's seventh-ranked women's basketball team beat Dallas Christian College, 83-76, Tuesday night. It was the Suns' sixth straight win, and the second over the Crusaders this season.

Cedar Valley (14-3) beat Dallas Christian (5-16) in the two schools' first meeting, 79-53, on Dec. 8 in Dallas.

Four players scored in double figures for the Suns, who have held the No. 7 spot in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III rankings for the past five weeks.

Cedar Valley center Sierra Headquist finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds and a block, going 9 of 17 from the field. She had five of her 12 boards on the offensive glass. It was her second straight double-double and fifth of the season. Forward Tiffani Hamm had 14 points, five rebounds and a steal, while shooting 7 of 12. Guard Nakia Brumley had 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Forward Shaniaa Davison scored 12 points off the bench.

The Suns trailed 27-16 after the first quarter and 37-28 at the half. They pulled within eight entering the fourth period before outscoring the Crusaders, 30-15, in the final 10 minutes to pull away.

Guard Shandrea Yeldell had nine points, five assists and three steals. Guard/forward Kate Valle had nine points, five rebounds, a block and a steal off the bench. Guard Ja-Tauria Miller scored eight points.

Cedar Valley was 37 of 84 from the floor for 44 percent. The Suns struggled behind the three-point line, going 3 of 18. They finished with 15 assists, and committed just 10 turnovers.

Cedar Valley, which is 3-0 in the Dallas Athletic Conference, will play at Dallas College Mountain View (9-7, 1-1 DAC) at 6 p.m. Thursday. If the Suns win that game, they will claim the league title, and earn the automatic bid to the postseason. If the Lions win, the two will play a one-game, winner-take-all playoff for the league crown and postseason berth.
