Suns Use Big 4th Quarter to Overcome Jaguars

LANCASTER, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley's women's basketball team beat Jacksonville College, 68-58, Tuesday night. 

The National Junior College Athletic Association Division III ninth-ranked Suns improved to 8-5 this season. Jacksonville, an NJCAA Division I program, fell to 2-8. 

Cedar Valley outscored Jacksonville, 15-9, in the first quarter. The Jaguars, who trailed by nine at halftime, outscored the Suns, 20-6, in the third period to take a 45-40 lead into the final quarter. But the Suns turned it up in the fourth period, running away from the Jaguars with a 28-13 differential to secure the victory. 

Carmela Hayden had 25 points off the bench, sinking 12 of 16 free throws for the Suns. Taylor Elam had 10 points and five rebounds for Cedar Valley, which shot 41 percent from the field. Precious Jackson-Sanders had 14 of the Suns' 53 rebounds, and Vivian Nwabufo grabbed 10 boards. Nekayla Williams had six points and eight rebounds.  

The Suns picked up their second win over an NJCAA Division I team this season. 

Cedar Valley will return to the court Jan. 6 at the University of Arkansas Cossatot.
