Suns Win Sixth Straight, Beat Southwestern Christian on Road

TERRELL, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley women's basketball team beat Southwestern Christian College on the road Saturday, 69-63.

It was the second win this season for the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III No. 7-ranked Suns over Southwestern Christian, an NJCAA Division I school. It was also Cedar Valley's third win over an NJCAA Division I or Division II opponent.

The Suns (13-5) are riding a six-game win streak, entering the final week of the regular season. Cedar Valley hosts Dallas College Richland (5-10) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a chance to clinch the Dallas Athletic Conference title.

Guards Deja Thomas and Carmela Hayden both scored 20 points for the Suns, each connecting on seven field goals. Hayden was 7 of 9 from the field, including 2 of 5 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Thomas was 7 of 12 from the field, going 3 of 4 from long distance, and 3-for-6 at the stripe. Thomas had six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Hayden had three steals.

Cedar Valley shot 45.7 percent from the floor, going 21 of 46. The Suns were 5 of 15 from the 3-point line, and sank 22 of 31 free throws for 71 percent.

The Suns led 27-22 at halftime. The Rams (5-16) kept it tight in the second half as Cedar Valley outscored Southwestern Christian, 22-21, in the third quarter. Both teams put 20 points on the board in the fourth.

Cedar Valley forward Precious Jackson-Sanders had nine points and nine rebounds. Guard Mia Thomas had seven points and two steals, and forward Ciana Fudzie added seven points, six boards, three steals and two blocks.

The Suns improved to 6-1 on the road this season.
