Suns Baseball go 2-1 in Opening Week of Season

In their opening week of the season, the CVC Baseball Team finished with a 2-1 record, which included a 2-0 series sweep against the Southwestern Pirates (J.V.) and a 12-9 loss to the Hill Rebels.

In game one of the series against the Pirates, the Suns came out in dominating fashion, building a 12-2 advantage going into the fifth inning. CVC cruised to a 14-4 victory to begin the year.

Jesus Payan registered a team high three runs and three RBIs, with three Suns scoring at least two runs (Tylor Frailey, Jesse Mendoza, Alex Rivera, J.J. Veloz Jr.). Veloz also had a team high four hits. Shannon Broussard notched four strikeouts in six innings to clinch the win.

The second game of the series with Southwestern would be a closer contest. CVC headed into the top of the sixth inning with a 4-2 lead, before allowing SWU four runs to go ahead, 6-4. The late rally by the Pirates did not phase the Suns as they replied with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to closeout the game, 7-6.

Alex Rivera led with three hits, three RBIs, and two runs, with Broussard adding two runs as well. Devin Crawford earned the win and Ryder Lognion would be credited with the save.

The only loss of the week for the Suns came at the hands of Hill, 12-9. After falling behind early 6-2, CVC stormed back in the top of the third inning to pull within one run, 6-5. The Suns played closely behind the Rebels in the following innings, so much so that they would knot the score 9-9 coming out of the top of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Hill pulled away adding three runs to go up 12-9 and secure the win as CVC was unable to score in the final three innings.

Mendoza turned in four RBIs and three hits and Rivera notched four hits and three RBIs. Alex Bush, Frailey, and Broussard all had two runs.

The Suns will have their season home opener this Tuesday, when they face Dallas Christian College (J.V.) in a doubleheader.
