Suns Baseball Places Ten on MAC All-Conference-All NJCAA Region V Baseball Team

After concluding their record-breaking 37 win season and an appearance in the NJCAA District C Tournament, as released by the conference office, Shannon Broussard, J.J. Veloz Jr., Jesus Payan,Alex Rivera, Alex Garcia, Tylor Frailey, Daniel Quintanilla, Luis Payan, Austin Nicholson, and Jesse Mendoza have all earned Metro Athletic Conference All-Conference and All-NJCAA Region V honors.

Finishing his sophomore year at CVC, Shannon Broussard was named All-MAC/Region V Pitcher of the Year and selected to the All-MAC/Region V First Team. Broussard made 13 appearances and starts during the season, tossing 70 strikeouts in 96.2 innings pitched with a 2.89 earned run average. The Baytown native earned 10 wins from the mound (tied for second in the NJCAA) including two complete games, one being a shutout. Broussard was also named MAC Player of the Week three times during the season.

In his first season at Cedar Valley, J.J. Veloz Jr. was named to the All-MAC/Region V First Team at shortstop. Veloz led the Suns and was seventh in the NJCAA in hits with 84. He also led the Suns in doubles (17) and was second on the team in batting average (.384), runs (63), and triples (5).

Sophomore Jesus Payan slugged his way to an All-MAC/Region V First Team selection as an outfielder, leading the Suns with 68 RBIs and finishing sixth in the NJCAA. J. Payan tied the team with six home runs and was second in hits with 80 and had a .381 batting average while earning MAC Player of the Week honors during the season.

In 52 games, Alex Rivera tallied up 66 hits, 44 RBIs, 36 runs, and tied a team-high six home runs on his way to the All-MAC/Region V First Team selection as a catcher. Rivera finished the year with a team-high .602 slugging average and had a batting average of .375.

Alex Garcia split time during the season on the mound and in the batter's box and was named to the All-MAC/Region V First Team as a designated hitter and All-MAC/Region V Second Team honors as a pitcher. In 173 at-bats, Garcia accumulated 71 hits, 54 RBIs, 31 runs, and five home runs with a team-high .410 batting average, with a MAC Player of the Week selection this season.

Headlining the All-MAC/Region V Second Team were Daniel Quintanilla, Tylor Frailey, and Luis Payan, with Austin Nicholson and Jesse Mendoza earning All-MAC/Region V Honorable Mention.

Quintanilla earned honors at first base with 49 hits, 32 runs, 27 RBIs, and four home runs with a .355 batting average.

Frailey led CVC and was tied for seventh in the NJCAA with 69 runs. The second-year Sun also had a team-highs in stolen bases (10) and triples (9) adding four home runs with a .362 batting average. The Midlothian native was also named MAC Player of the Week during the season.

In 15 appearances and 25.2 innings pitched, L. Payan went 3-0 during the year with one save as a relief pitcher, racking up 14 strikeouts with a 3.86 ERA.

Nicholson posted a 3-1 record with two saves in relief pitching duty, registering 25 strikeouts in 16 appearances through 30.2 innings pitched with a 4.20 ERA. Freshman Mendoza had a very productive year, amassing 49 hits, 37 runs, 25 RBIs, and nine stolen bases.
