Suns Meet Bears in District Tournament Opener Wednesday
Third-seeded Dallas College Cedar Valley's baseball team will meet sixth-seeded Dallas College Brookhaven 10 a.m. Wednesday in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South Central District Tournament opening game at Dallas College Eastfield.
The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to the double-elimination round Thursday. The championship game is set for noon Saturday, with an if-necessary game to follow. The tournament schedule may be altered due to weather conditions.
The Suns (36-19) are coming off a 13-10 win over Brookhaven (15-36) in the regular season finale. The Bears won the first two games of the series. Cedar Valley swept the first three-game series with Brookhaven earlier in the year.
Cedar Valley's .370 team batting average ranks fourth in the NJCAA Division III. The Suns have driven in 463 runs, while producing 642 hits, 129 doubles and 31 triples – all which rank second in the country.
Caden Robertson's 17 home runs lead the nation. He is batting .422 with 73 runs batted in, 16 doubles and four triples. His 73 RBI is fourth in the country. Blaine Thomas leads the country with 25 doubles, and is hitting .486, which ranks 12th. He also has three triples, three home runs and 48 RBI. Antonio Sabala is batting .402 with 16 doubles, five triples, one home run, 41 RBI and 50 walks. He leads the country in walks, and ranks 12th in triples. Cesar Mora is batting .414 with five doubles, two triples and 25 RBI in 24 games. Ryan Talley is batting .410 with seven doubles, two triples, one home run and 55 RBI. His 55 RBI ranks 19th in the NJCAA Division III.
Pitcher Caleb Pacheco is 10-2 with a 5.49 earned run average and 50 strikeouts in 15 appearances. His 10 wins leads the country. Rece Houghton is 7-1 with a 5.19 ERA in 12 appearances. Landon Kinder has three saves, which ranks eighth in the NJCAA Division III, and has a 3.61 ERA.
