Cedar Valley Runs Past Brookhaven in District Opener

MESQUITE, Texas -- Dallas College Cedar Valley's baseball team beat Dallas College Brookhaven, 13-1 in five innings, Wednesday in the opening round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South Central District Tournament at Dallas College Eastfield.

The win sends the Suns on to Thursday's double-elimination round. Cedar Valley (37-19) will meet Dallas College Richland (35-20) at 1 p.m.

The Suns tied the program record for most wins in a season, matching that of the 2017 team.

Caleb Pacheco (11-2) went all five innings, giving up a run, four hits and a walk, while striking out five.

Cedar Valley scored in each of its four at-bats, plating six runs in the second inning to race out to an 8-0 lead in a game that was halted over an hour due to lightning strikes. Brookhaven (15-37) picked up its lone run on a solo blast by Tucker Simpson in the top of the fourth.

Every Suns position player either scored or had a hit. Cedar Valley finished with 11 hits.

Caden Robertson belted his nation-leading 18th home run, going 1-for-3 with four runs batted in. Matthew Marsic doubled twice and walked once. Blaine Thomas was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Ryan Talley was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a sacrifice fly. Antonio Sabala went 1-for-2 with a double, two stolen bases and two walks. Elian Gonzales went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks. Cooper Brewer was 1-for-2 with a walk. Jaquavius Davis went 1-for-3.

The Suns, who are receiving votes in the NJCAA Division III rankings, beat No. 11 Richland twice in the most recent three-game series. The two teams split the six regular season games.
