Baseball Sweeps Mountain View, Claims First DAC Series

LANCASTER, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley's baseball team swept Dallas College Mountain View for its first Dallas Athletic Conference series victory of the season.

The Suns beat the Lions, 6-2 and 11-3, in Games 2 and 3 of the series to run their winning streak to seven in a row. Cedar Valley improved to 17-11, 3-6 in the DAC. Mountain View fell to 11-14, 1-8.

In the second game of the series, which was moved to Dallas College Eastfield Friday afternoon, Mountain View scored the game's first two runs in the opening inning, and held the lead until the bottom of the sixth when Cedar Valley put five runs on the board to take control. The Suns added an insurance run in the eighth.

Cedar Valley outhit Mountain View, 11-8.

Jacob Cueva, Aiden Hatton and Nathan Tucker all went 2-for-4 for the Suns. Hatton and Tucker drove in a run apiece. Jordan Anguiano was 1-for-3 with two sacrifices and two runs batted in from the leadoff spot. Homar Barrera-Lopez doubled and walked in three at-bats. Daniel Brandon III doubled, and drove in a run. Lane Atherton went 1-for-3 with a double, sac fly and an RBI. Hatton and Tucker each had a stolen base.

Kortes Howard went 3-for-4, and Shaun Williams was 1-for-4 with two RBI for the Lions. Jeter Garcia, Ian Bower, Zeke Velasquez and Rene Garcia each had a hit. Velasquez also walked twice and scored. Ian Bower also scored a run.

Suns starter Kyler Baker (3-2) worked six innings, allowing seven hits, two runs and three walks, and struck out six in the win. Caleb Bustillos pitched the final three innings, surrendering a hit and a walk without giving up a run, and struck out two to record his first save.

In the series finale Saturday, Mountain View scored first in the opening inning again before Cedar Valley responded with five runs in the second. After the Lions picked up two in the top of the fifth to pull within 6-3, the Suns put four runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning to take a seven-run lead Mountain View couldn't recover from.

The Suns outhit the Lions, 15-8.

Cesar Mora went 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBI and two stolen bases for the Suns. Zachary Mikes also was 3-for-4, and drove in a run. Anguiano went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a sacrifice. Cueva, Brandon III and Hatton each were 2-for-4. Brandon doubled, and had two RBI. Hatton drove in a run. Hayden Carpenter was 1-for-4

Johnny Toups was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk for Mountain View. Huston Cornish had a solo home run. Aiden Fores and Jeter Garcia both were 1-for-3. Howard doubled in four trips to the plate.  Greg Willis was 1-for-4. Zahir Vargas walked, and had an RBI.

Cedar Valley starter Javier Balderas (2-2) got the win, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk, and struck out three. Avery Dubose worked the final four innings of shutout relief, yielding four hits and two walks, while fanning a season-high six batters.

Mountain View middle reliever Sloane Reves went 2.1 innings, giving up three hits, a run and a walk, while fanning three. Daniel Martinez worked the final inning, and did not allow a hit, a run or a walk, while recording one strikeout.

Cedar Valley hosts East Texas Baptist University Junior Varsity in a twin bill Monday at noon before returning to league play to begin a three-game series with Dallas College Brookhaven (12-16, 3-6) at home noon Wednesday. Mountain View begins its three-game series with No. 2 nationally-ranked Dallas College Eastfield (25-7, 8-1) also on Wednesday.
