Suns Win Series vs. No. 14 Bears
LANCASTER, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley's baseball team beat 14th-ranked Dallas College Brookhaven 8-6 in the second game of a doubleheader to win the three-game series Saturday at Lancaster High School.
Brookhaven won the first game Saturday, 4-3.
The Suns (25-26, 9-18 Dallas Athletic Conference) won their fourth game in their last five. It was their second conference series victory of the season.
In the series finale, Cedar Valley scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a four-run lead. Brookhaven (29-24, 17-10) answered with three runs in its next at-bat to pull within one. But the Suns picked up two in their half of the inning to push the lead back to three. The Bears scored one in the fifth and another in the eighth, while the Suns added a run in the seventh to secure the win.
Cedar Valley's Joshua Lile homered and doubled, and drove in three runs for Cedar Valley. It was his fifth homer of the year. Lane Atherton was 2 for 3 with four RBI. His four runs driven in matched a career high set last year against Dallas College North Lake. Ryan Hernandez, Julio Cuotto and David Chandler each had a hit, and Nathan Tucker had an RBI.
Brookhaven's Luis Fuenmayor went 3 for 5 with a double. Abraham Fortis was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI. Bradley Boedeker was 2 for 5. Tanner Sliva went 1 for 3 with an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.
Blake Brown (4-2) got the win in relief, giving up four hits, an unearned run and no walks, while striking out two in three innings. Caden Nachtigall earned his second save of the series after working the final two innings. He gave up one run, five hits and no walks, and fanned four.
In the first game, Brookhaven scored in the top of the ninth to win it. The Bears scored the game-winning run after the Suns put two on the board in the eighth to tie it at 3-3. Fortis went 4 for 5 with two home runs, a double, three RBI and a stolen base.
Cedar Valley's Jovan Bernal tripled, and drove in two runs. Chandler was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Elyjah Anderson went 2 for 3 with a stolen base. Rendon Garcia was 2 for 5. Joshawa Esquivel had a pinch-hit double. Hernandez and Cuotto both had a hit.
Suns starter Johnny Garcia allowed three runs, six hits and two walks, while striking out five. Lyncoln Schaeffer pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and a walk, and struck out one.
Cedar Valley will close the regular season with a three-game series against Dallas College Mountain View. Game 1 is scheduled for 12 p.m. Wednesday in the Suns' final home game of the year.
