Cedar Valley Men's Hoops Escapes Southwestern Adventist, 62-61

KEENE, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley men's basketball team escaped Southwestern Adventist University, 62-61, on the road Wednesday night in the Suns' first game of the new year, following a 28-day hiatus.

Armani Reese scored on a layup with 2:14 left on the clock to give Cedar Valley (7-10) a five-point lead. Southwestern Adventist (3-10) cut it to three on Bryon Fields' jumper with 56 seconds to go. Orlando Gooden sank two free throws to pull the Knights within one with 15 seconds remaining, but the Suns held on.

Marcel Hurst had 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting, and grabbed five rebounds for Cedar Valley, which will play at Dallas College North Lake (8-12, 3-2 Dallas Athletic Conference) in the opening game of the second round of league play 1 p.m. Saturday.

Kendall Mitchell hit five of nine field goals, and scored 11 points. Reese added 10 points and 10 boards. It was the Suns' sophomore center's fourth double-double of the season.

Southwestern Adventist's Byron Fields had 22 points and 14 boards, shooting 9 of 17 from the floor. Mohamed Musa had 16 points, seven steals, five assists and four rebounds, while shooting 6 of 13. Gooden had 13 points, four assists, four steals and a block. He was 5 of 15 from the field.

Cedar Valley outscored Southwestern Adventist, 38-20, in the paint. The Suns outscored the Knights, 29-2, in bench production. Southwestern Adventist had 31 points off turnovers. Cedar Valley had 11.

The Suns shot 44.8 percent, while the Knights hit 33.8 percent of their field goals.
