Suns Meet Lions for NJCAA District Championship 2 p.m. Saturday

Dallas College Cedar Valley's women's basketball team will meet Dallas College Mountain View in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South Central District championship 2 p.m. Saturday at Dallas College North Lake.

The winner advances to the NJCAA Division III National Tournament March 15-18 in Rochester, Minnesota.

Saturday's district championship marks the third game between the two Dallas Athletic Conference opponents this season, with each winning on their home court. The Suns (15-4) beat the Lions, 75-74, in overtime Jan. 26. Mountain View (11-7) won the second game, 79-67, on Feb. 16.

Ranked No. 11 in the NJCAA Division III poll, Cedar Valley's lone blemish in its last eight games came at Mountain View, which is ranked 15th.

Cedar Valley's Shandrea Yeldell is averaging 17.8 points, 4.3 assists and 3.6 steals, while shooting 53 percent from the field. Nakia Brumley averages 15.4 points, 4.7 assists and 3.3 steals. Sierra Headquist is scoring 13.2 points, and leads the team in rebounds (7.5) and blocks (1.2).

Ja-Tauria Miller is averaging 11 points per game. Kate Valle averages 9.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.2 steals. Tiffani Hamm is averaging 6.8 points and 5.3 boards.

The Suns fell in last year's NJCAA Division III Southeast District Championship, 76-56, to Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland.

This year's women's district championship game will follow the men's title game at North Lake.

Tickets are $10 for a tournament pass for all games, $5 for adult single session of two games and $3 for students ages 6-18. Children under 6 are free. Dallas College students and employees with a current ID (must present at the gate) are free. Game programs are $2.
