Cedar Valley Women's Hoops Wins Third Straight
LANCASTER, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley's ninth-ranked women's basketball team beat Southwestern Christian College, 69-49, Monday.
It was the third straight victory for the Suns, who earned their first Top 10 ranking of the season in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III poll. Cedar Valley improved to 4-2 entering Friday and Saturday's Cardinal Classic at Trinity Valley Community College.
Mia Thomas had 26 points, seven rebounds and two steals. She made six of her 15 triple tries. Keely Burks had 12 points and two steals, going 4 of 5 from the floor. Carmela Hayden and Nekayla Williams each scored nine points, with Williams pulling down a season-high 14 rebounds. Deja Thomas had seven points, seven steals and five assists. Precious Jackson-Sanders had seven of the Suns' 41 rebounds, and also blocked a shot.
Cedar Valley outscored Southwestern Christian in every quarter, using a 19-11 advantage in the second period to take a 35-22 lead into halftime. The NJCAA Division I Rams (3-3) were outscored by four in the third quarter and three in the fourth, but the Suns' lead continued to grow.
The Suns, who knocked down 17 of 21 free throws, equaled their best start through six games for the third time in program history. They were 4-2 last season and in 2020-21 – the COVID season played in the spring.
