LANCASTER, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley women's basketball team erased a 20-point deficit to beat Western Oklahoma State College, 84-82, Tuesday in the home opener.
The win over the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I opponent was the first of the season for the NJCAA Division III No. 4-ranked Suns. It also avenged the season-opening loss to Western Oklahoma State on the road Nov. 1.
Suns freshman guard Cyncere McDonald sank a free throw with 16.1 seconds left to give Cedar Valley a one-point lead. Freshman forward Passion Bolden sank another free throw with 1.6 seconds remaining, and the Suns held on.
Freshman forward Kamryn Williams scored 27 points on 12 of 21 shooting, and pulled down 17 rebounds, while grabbing two steals in a monster game. Sophomore guard Aliyah Muhammad had 15 points, and sophomore forward Vivian Nwabufo added 14. Muhammad was 5-for-5 from the floor, while canning four triples. Nwabufo hit six of eight field goals
Cedar Valley (1-2) fell behind big early, but battled back to pull within 55-43 at halftime. The Suns outscored the Western Pioneers, 41-27, in the second half.
Tazhia Watson finished with 29 points, 16 rebounds, four steals and a block for Western Oklahoma State (2-2). She was 10 of 20 from the field. Abygale Mashaney scored 15 points, and Aaliyah Young had 10 rebounds, five assists and six points.
The Suns shot 47.9 percent, going 34 of 71. They were 4-for-8 from the three-point line. The Western Pioneers were 23 of 71 for 32.4 percent. They sank 30 of 38 free throws.
Bolden had 11 points and four rebounds. McDonald finished with seven points and two steals.
Cedar Valley competes in the New Mexico Classic Friday and Saturday in Hobbs, New Mexico. The Suns play host New Mexico Junior College 7 p.m. Friday, and meet Grayson College 1 p.m. Saturday.
