Cedar Valley Reaches District Semifinals for Third Straight Year

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley women's soccer team beat Dallas College Mountain View, 5-0, Tuesday in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South District quarterfinals at Dallas College Brookhaven.

The win sends the third-seeded Suns (8-3-3) on to Thursday's 6:30 p.m. semifinals to play second-seeded Dallas College Richland (8-3-2). The two teams split during the regular season, each winning on the other's home field.

It will be the second straight year the two teams will have met in the district semifinals. Richland won last year's matchup, 2-0.

Five different Suns scored in Tuesday's quarterfinal win. Mariah Macias recorded the game winner in the 15th minute on an assist from Lilianna Tapia. Tapia gave Cedar Valley a two-goal lead eight minutes later on an assist from Jennifer Mendez.

That's where it stood at halftime. The Suns cracked 15 of their 27 shots in the first half.

Seven minutes into the second half, Celeste Gonzalez found the back of the net after banging in a rebound off Karina Rivera's initial shot.

That came after Mountain View backup goalkeeper Kaylynne Castillo stopped a penalty kick, and then made a follow-up save seconds later.

Cedar Valley's Brianna Barcenas made it 4-0 after depositing a pass from Victoria Hernandez. Hernandez scored the final goal in the 71st minute after Victory Oyoyo Peter sent her a beautiful cross through the box to the right side. Hernandez touched it in for her team-leading ninth goal.

Macias and Tapia each have five goals. Gonzalez picked up her third goal, and Barcenas her second.

Cedar Valley starting goalkeeper Olivia Reyna (3-1-2) made two saves in the first half to record the win between the posts. Serena Aldana stopped four shots in the second half.

Keeyanna Lawrence, Igsel Lopez and Jada Onyango all had shots on goal for Mountain View.

It was the Suns' second win over the Lions in as many games. Cedar Valley beat Mountain View, 3-1, to end the regular season last week.

Thursday will mark the third consecutive year for the Suns to reach the district semifinals under head coach John Antonisse.
