Beck Named DAC Defensive Player of Week

Dallas College Cedar Valley's Laila Beck was named the Dallas Athletic Conference volleyball Defensive Player of the Week.

Dallas College Cedar Valley's Laila Beck and Dallas College Brookhaven's Ariel Austin were named the Dallas Athletic Conference volleyball Players of the Week.

 

Beck, a freshman outside hitter from Dayton, Texas, earned the conference's defensive honor, while Austin, a freshman outside hitter from Crowley, Texas, picked up the league's offensive award.

 

Beck had four solo blocks and 11 block assists in 11 sets as Cedar Valley went 2-0 in league play and 3-0 overall last week. She also pounded 28 kills. In a road sweep of Dallas College Richland, Beck had three blocks, including a solo, and seven kills, finishing with nine points. In a sweep of Dallas College Mountain View, she finished with six blocks, including two solos, and nine kills, while hitting .273. In a five-set nonconference win over Seminole State, Beck had six blocks, including a solo, and 12 kills, while hitting .357 to complete the Suns' perfect week.

 

Austin had a pair of double-doubles as the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III No. 8-ranked Bears won both league matches by way of the sweep. Austin had 17 kills and 11 digs, while hitting .341 in a three-set win at Dallas College North Lake. She finished with 12 kills and 13 digs in a sweep of Dallas College Eastfield.

 

Cedar Valley (8-14, 2-0 DAC) hosts North Lake 6 p.m. Monday and plays at Dallas College Eastfield Thursday before hosting Arlington Baptist and Southwestern Adventist University in a home tri-match beginning at 2 p.m. The Suns will complete the five-match week in a 1 p.m. matinee at Dallas Christian College.

 

Brookhaven (13-9, 2-0 DAC) plays at Mountain View 6 p.m. Monday before hosting Richland Thursday at the same time. The Bears, which climbed up to No. 7 in this week's poll, have won five in a row, entering the second week of conference play.
